Samsung issues warning; Washing machines explode: Reports

Samsung is making the news again, but this time for a different exploding product, according to reports.

Samsung announced it is working with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) since the agency issued a warning about certain top-loading Samsung washing machines. Some consumers have reported that their washer exploded, CNN Money reported.

The units affected are top-loading washing machines made between March 2011 and April 2016, the company wrote in a statement.

Melissa Thaxton, a 32-year-old mom from Georgia, told ABC Newsthat her Samsung washer was “perfect” – until it blew up in April while her then-4-year-old son was standing next to her.

“It was the loudest sound. It sounded like a bomb went off in my ear,” Thaxton said. “There were wires, nuts, the cover actually was laying on the floor.”

“I just remember covering my head and leaning towards my son and just screaming this scream that I didn’t even know I could scream,” she added.

Twenty-one people have reported to the CSPC that their top-loading Samsung washers have exploded, ABC reported.

A woman in Texas said in a court filing that her washing machine “exploded with such ferocity that it penetrated the interior wall of her garage,” CNN Money reported.

Thaxton told ABC that Samsung offered her a refund, but she is speaking out to warn other people by taking the company to court.

“If that would have hit my child, there is no telling – it would have been catastrophic,” she told ABC. “And that’s why I’m speaking out.”

A federal class-action lawsuit against Samsung was filed in a New Jersey federal court last month, CNN Money reported.

Jason Lichtman, the plaintiffs’ lawyer, is arguing that a support rod in the washer is not enough to hold the tub in place.

“The rod can slide right out,” he told ABC News. “And that’s what causes the washing machine to blow apart.”

The lawsuit also alleges that Samsung “has moved aggressively to collect and destroy all evidence of the defective machines” after they exploded.
