Ahoy! An old shipwreck has been discovered in Boston’s Seaport District.

Crews from the construction company Skanska unearthed the rare piece of buried treasure sometime last week while digging at a construction site on Seaport Boulevard, according to CBS Boston. It’s about 50-feet long and appears to be from the 1800s.

They’ve stopped construction, and now an impromptu archaeological dig is underway.

Joe Bagley, Boston’s archaeologist, said on Twitter he plans to live-tweet the dig all day Thursday.

It’s not every day you just stumble across a previously unknown shipwreck in the dirt, Bagley said.

“This is the first shipwreck that I know of in Boston discovered in filled land,” he told WBZ-TV. “This is the largest and most significant by far.”

Will the building boom underway in the vibrant section of South Boston unearth more seafaring history? Time will tell.
