Street vendors, jazz coming to La Marqueta this fall

Award-winning street food will be coming to East Harlem’s La Marqueta this fall.

Winners and finalists of the Vendy Awards street food competitions will serve food in the historic market, located under the Metro North tracks at 116th Street for five Sundays in a row, starting Oct. 26. There will also be live jazz performances and Brooklyn Brewery beer.

The event is created in partnership with City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito’s office. Mark-Viverito will speak this Sunday at 2 p.m. on the resurgence of east Harlem.

The century-old market, which was a center of Puerto Rican culture in the 1950s, has had several attempts at revitalization. In August, Mark-Viverito renewed the city’s commitment to make the market great again, and announced $3 million from the council for infrastructure improvements, as well as state support.
