New York is home to America’s first and oldest boat show.
Debuting in 1905, the Progressive Insurance New York Boat Show celebrates its 110th anniversary in 2015. To put that in perspective, it means that New York City has had more boat shows than mayors, with Bill de Blasio becoming the 109th in 2014. For more than a century, an estimated 85 million people have attended the event. Originally, the boats were displayed in the streets, drawn by horses; back then, at the turn of the century, there were only 15,000 recreational boats in the U.S. These days, there are more than 15 million recreational boats in use, and the exhibit is now a full-scale, five-day event taking place at the Javits Center. Projections for 2015 reflect an estimated 40,000 guests will be coming by to see the 275 exhibitors and 250 models. This year introduces new educational opportunities and historical artifacts, ranging from full-scale models to outboards and other machinery, not to mention documents and photographs from the city’s long maritime history. You can take part in the festivities this week by stopping by the Javits Center from Jan. 21-25.
