The 2016 Rio Olympics are set to kick off Friday night with the opening ceremony, where athletes from around the world will represent their country before they vie for the gold. Among them will be 554 athletes (262 men, 292 women) from the U.S. competing in 30 sports. There will also be 30 participants from New York state at the Games, including New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony, who will be part of Team USA basketball. Anthony is the first U.S. men’s basketball player selected to four Olympic teams. He won two gold medals and a bronze in the last three Games. Nine additional athletes will also be representing New York City and the boroughs of Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx.
“Every two years, Americans come together to cheer for our finest athletes as they compete on the world’s largest stage, the Olympic Games. At this year’s Summer Games in Rio, 30 world-class participants from across this great state will be competing,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. “As New Yorkers, we are proud of all of our Olympic athletes and their extraordinary perseverance and strength. At a time when our country wrestles with division and intolerance, we are unified in our admiration of the achievements of these athletes. The Olympics provide more than gold and glory; they remind us of the strength of our diversity and the triumph of the human spirit.” Here is the full list of athletes from New York who will be in the Olympics:
