It’s a tie for the most-nominated show of the 2018 Tony Awards. The American Theatre Wing and Broadway League have revealed who will be competing for the top prize in theater, with two musicals leading the way: Tina Fey’s adaptation of Mean Girls and SpongeBob SquarePants, both scoring 12 nods.
The most nominated play was the breathtaking revival of Angels in America, which is up for 11 statues, while Broadway’s hottest new play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child locked in 10 nominations.
The Tonys will also present Lifetime Achievement awards to Chita Rivera, one of the brightest lights on Broadway since 1951, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, who’s composed approximately half of the most popular musicals of all time from Jesus Christ Superstar to School of Rock. Special awards will also go to John Leguizamo for his one-man show Latin History for Morons and Bruce Springsteen, who just extended his perpetually sold-out run of intimate concerts at the Walter Kerr Theater.
The 72nd annual Tony Awards will be hosted by nominees Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban and broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 10, from 8-11 p.m. on CBS. Tickets go on sale May 15 at tonyawards.com.
