The French may be taking over Brooklyn, but they’ll be damned to call Wonder Bread a suitable vehicle for their jambon and brie sandwiches. So, naturally, they held abattlelast week to determine the best baguette on this side of the Atlantic. The initial picks were made by readers of the online magazineFrench Morning, then 15 of the finalists— from the likes of Epicerie Boulud, Breads Bakery, La Boulangerie and Almondine — brought their best breads to a blind tasting last week at the Sofitel New York. RELATED:‘Hamilton’ choreographer will give ‘Cats’ new moves in Broadway revival In addition to a judging panel of noteworthy names in the food world, includinga Michelin-starred chef, a dean at the French Culinary Institute and the author of “The Best Bread Ever,” the audience could also cast their ballots. After all the breads had been samples with charcuterie, cheese and jam, Maison Kayser, with founder Eric Kayser in attendance, took the title of Best Baguette in NYC. The jury also recognized Amy’s Bakery and Breads Bakery, while the special fan prize went to New Jersey’s Choc O Pain. Take note for your spring picnic.
