This tiny deer was just born at the Queens Zoo

Ready to swoon? Take a look at one of the newest additions to the Wildlife Conservation Society’s (WCS) Queens Zoo: a baby pudu.

The southern pudu is the world’s smallest deer species, and a baby fawn was born just less than a month ago on May 12. The fawn, who is currently still nursing, will transition to leaves, grain, kale (the veg isn’t just for Brooklynites), carrots and hay.

So far, there are three pudu on exhibit at the Queens Zoo, including the new fawn, and this is the third year in a row that the couple have successfully reared a fawn. The baby pudu, who is still unnamed, will only grow to be 12 to 14 inches at the shoulder. It was only 6 inches tall and 6 inches long at birth.

The pudu might remind you of a puppy, and not just becuase of its adorable looks. Pudu bark when they feel threatened and run in zig-zag patterns to escape predators. They may not be as friendly as pups, though – they are shy animals.
