Two people hit, killed by LIRR trains: MTA

LIRR service

Two people were struck and killed by Long Island Rail Road trains Monday morning, officials said, disrupting LIRR service system-wide.

The first incident occurred when a person on the tracks was struck by a train near Hicksville Station around 4 a.m. Monday, according to the MTA, leading to a temporary suspension of LIRR service on the Ronkonkoma Branch.

Another person was hit shortly after, around 4:45 a.m., by a different train on the tracks near Woodside, leading to an LIRR service suspension between Penn Station and Jamaica.

Both people were struck by non-passenger trains, meaning no customers were on board at the time, per the MTA.

An MTA official did not immediately have information on the deceased’s genders or age. MTA Police are investigating both situations.

The incidents led to several canceled and delayed LIRR trains during the Monday morning commute.

According to the LIRR and based on officials’ past experience with people being hit by trains, it can take up to four hours for service to be fully restored.

As of around 7 a.m., the tracks had been cleared, and as of 9:30, the LIRR is operating with “scattered residual delays” of about 10 to 15 minutes.
