The initial review for Sam Smith’s “Writing’s on the Wall” — the opening theme to the new James Bond film “Spectre”— may have been mixed, but maybe I’m warming to it thanks to its official video. The clip is a delightfully retro throwback to the days of movie soundtrack videos stuffed with footage from the actual film — and since the film in question is a new 007 adventure, it’s hard to dislike it. And those swelling strings are appropriately Bond-worthy, after all. But why can’t Smith look us in they eye until the very end?
