VIDEOS: Leaving White House ‘surprisingly emotional,’ first lady says

The night after her husband made his final, emotional address as President of the United States, Michelle Obama said goodbye on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.”

“I didn’t think it was going to be that emotional,” Obama told Fallon during Wednesday’s episode. “It’s been surprisingly emotional for all of us in ways that we didn’t expect.”

As part of her appearance on the NBC show, Obama played “Catchphrase” with Dave Chappelle and Jerry Seinfeld and secretly watched as “regular Americans,” including one of her former Princeton classmates, said their farewells to her portrait and shared what her tenure as first lady meant to them.

After they finished speaking, Obama surprised them by coming out from behind a curtain. Many shed tears as she embraced them and thanked them for their kind words.

Obama and Fallon also wrote out “thank you” notes. Her first one was to her husbandfor “proving you’re not a lame duck, but my very own silver fox” because she’s “angling for a good gift.”

Fallon cheekily thanked Michelle for “bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase, ‘the right to bare arms,’” as a picture of her oft-talked about well-toned limbs appeared on the screen.

Obama also thanked Inauguration Day “or as I like to call it ‘‘Let’s Move,’” which referenced her family’s final day in the White House andthe program she developed to combat childhood obesity in America.

Singer Stevie Wonder dedicated his performances of “Isn’t She Lovely” and “My Cherie Amour” to the outgoing first lady.
