Want Carson Wentz to play? He probably won’t even suit up

The Eagles had a plan. To draft Carson Wentzand slowly mold him into a franchise quarterback. The key word there is slowly.

With Sam Bradford ready to go as the Eagles QB1, and head coach Doug Pederson’s coach on the field Chase Daniel in the No. 2 spot on the depth chart, Carson Wentz brings up the rear at the third spot.

And NFL teams don’t typically dress their third quarterback.

With only 46 players permitted to appear on the field on any given Sunday, the Eagles will absolutely lean toward a defensive back, linebacker or special teamer for the last gameday spot. Leaving Wentzin shorts and a T-shirt and taking notes.

“Typically, the third quarterback is down,” Pederson told PhillyVoice Sunday. “It’s hard right now to look down the road, but if we had to play this week, Carson would be down. He’d be the third quarterback. He’d be deactivated. That’s probably the direction we’re heading, I would think is going that route. Obviously barring injury and, as you know, how this game is, but typically the third quarterback, whoever that is, is down on game day.”

So for those gunning for Wentz to burst on the scene as a rookie in 2016, there will need to be a lot of bad fortune on the Eagles’ depth chart and likely in the standings too.

The 2016 Eagles are Sam Bradford’s team, and like most of the top prospects in Philly — like the Phillies’ J.P. Crawford, the Sixers’ Ben Simmons and Flyers’ Travis Sanheim — more patience will be required.
