After arguably one of the most politically charged and divisive weeks in our nation’s history comes one of its most patriotic days just when we might need it most.
Friday is Veterans Day, and cities nationwide are honoring those who have served and are serving our country. One of the biggest events, America’s Parade, takes place right here in New York. The opening ceremony, which took place in Madison Square Park, concluded at 11 a.m. to mark the founding of Veterans Day at the end of World War I. The day is celebrated every Nov. 11 because the war ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. This year’s theme honors the 15th anniversary of 9/11, giving special recognition to post-9/11 veterans and First Responders. The 25th anniversary of Desert Storm will also be noted. The U.S. Coast Guard is the featured military branch. Grand Marshals are Col. Stephanie Dawson of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, Joseph Duggan Jr. of FDNY and NYPD Det. Nelson Vergara. All three are first responders and post-9/11 military veterans. According to AmericasParade.org, last year’s parade featured 38,000 participants and more than 300 marching units with half a million spectators lining its route.
Naturally, with an event of this stature come street closures, including the Fifth Avenue parade route from 26th Street to 52nd Street. Here’s where else to watch out for: View a live stream of the parade here.
