“Winds in the east, mist coming in, like somethin’ is brewin’ and bout to begin…” That’s right, America’s favorite super-nanny is back — and we really can’t wait for the highly-anticipated sequel, Mary Poppins Returns.
The first look at Mary Poppins Returns, directed by Rob Marshall, debuted during the 2018 Oscars Sunday night. Emily Blunt took on Julie Andrew’s 1964 role as the new Mary Poppins (and she’s practically perfect in every way).
Jane and Michael Banks (Emily Mortimer and Ben Whishaw) are all grown up — Michael even lives in his parents’ old house on No. 17 Cherry Tree Lane — and the film takes place in 1930s London, 25 years after the events of the first movie.
“In Depression-era London, a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins following a personal loss,” Disney writes of the plot. “Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack, she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.”

Dick Van Dyke returns as Mr. Dawes Jr., the son of banker Mr. Dawes Senior (if you recall, Van Dyke played Bert the chimney sweep and Mr. Dawes Senior in the original Disney film).
According to The New York Times, the sequel also includes Meryl Streep, who plays Poppins’ cousin Topsy, and Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lamplighter Jack, Poppins’ friend.
When asked what it was like to portray the iconic nanny, Blunt told USA TODAY that it was “joyful” and “utterly magical.”
“I find it comforting, the idea of someone just sweeping in who’s no-nonsense and cleaning everything up and making everything right again in a magical way that’s not sentimental,” she continued.
