Whether you’re hosting the big bash this year or just bringing your signature dish to a cookout, you’re going to want to know where and when you can stock up. Most big grocery store chains will be open and running their normal hours, but you’ll need to check on regional or family-run supermarkets. But if you’re headed to places like Kroger, Aldi, Publix, Food Lion, or Wegman’s, you can probably count on them being open. If you’re worried, call ahead and check on whether they’ll be shortening their hours at all on the holiday itself.

Department stores will be opening, with some of them running fantastic deals for refreshing your wardrobe for the coming cooler months. Nordstroms, for example, is running a Summer Sale with up to 40% off everything from women’s clothing to home goods through September 9. Even better, their tabletop and kitchen sale features thousands of sleek items that you can grab early and show off at your holiday bash. (We won’t tell that you nabbed them for a steal.)
Are hardware stores open on Labor Day?
Whether you’re wondering, is Home Depot open on Labor Day, or you’re more of an Ace Hardware or Lowes person, this one’s a yes. For any problem that pop up, like your AC breaking on this generally steamy holiday or finding your outdoor grill is on the fritz, you can head on down to one of these locations to find your fix.
Are restaurants open on Labor Day?
Maybe you just want to enjoy a nice meal with your family in the AC instead of standing outside over a hot grill in the humid weather. Restaurants get it. Well, chains at least. You’ll find that most major chains are staying open for the holiday. So if you were eyeing Applebee’s, TGI Friday’s, Texas Roadhouse, Denny’s, Outback Steakhouse, Chili’s, P.F. Chang’s, Red Lobster or The Cheesecake Factory, you’re in luck. Just make sure to call the location ahead of time if you plan to go in the later hours. Some locations might be shutting down service a couple hours early for the holiday weekend.
Are fast food restaurants open on Labor Day?
Just because it’s a holiday doesn’t mean your cravings for McDonald’s fries quits. So, is McDonald’s open on Labor Day? Yes! As is Burger King, Wendy’s, Hardee’s, Carl’s Jr, Taco Bell and pretty much any other you can think of.
Some chains are exceptions, though. We know fan favorites include Chick-fil-A and Chipotle, but both of these restaurants aren’t open on Monday, September 3. Make sure you know both the Chipotle holiday hours and whether you’ll find Chick-fil-A open on Labor Day before you head out to hit the drive-thru.
Where can I buy booze on Labor Day?
As we mentioned, most chain grocery stores will be open over the long weekend and on Labor Day itself. You should be able to grab extra beer and wine at least from most of these locations, in addition to the big box stores that are open. Are coffee shops open on Labor Day?
Again, this depends on the cafe. If your favorite coffee shop is part of a larger chain, it should be open and running standard hours on Labor Day. Perhaps select locations will have slightly shortened hours, but a quick phone call will settle that. If it’s a small shop, call ahead now and ask. Some owners want their staff to have the holiday off and will be closing their doors.
