Gather all the members of your modern family, because the hit ABC comedy returns to your small screens tonight with Modern Family season 9 episode 1. You’re not going to want to miss a minute, either, since it’s the beginning of what is probably the penultimate season of the series.
We know you’ve come to love the three intertwining families as if they’re your own, and for the creators of Modern Family, that’s more than they ever hoped for. “Our original goal was to just stay on the air,” co-creator Steve Levitan told Deadline. He and Christopher Lloyd have had their eyes on the end before any of the viewers were willing to acknowledge that it might be in the show’s future. Even before these final two seasons were on the table, Levitan felt like “10 sounded like a nice round number.”
So what can you expect from the show?
Modern Family season 9 episode 1 will pick up where the eight season left off, of course. Both Manny and Luke have graduated and are facing very adult hurdles like job hunting and moving away from the support of their families. This new season will continue with the families in the real and quirky way you’ve come to know and love.
Just because Luke and Manny, who were just pre-teens when they were first introduced on the show, have grown up doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty going on in the three homes. The show is dedicated to bringing all the members of the clan together for family events large and small, from family portraits and sunny days by the pool to graduations and holidays. In fact, that’s how Levitan think they’ll end the show when it finally wraps, probably at the end of season 10, commenting, “I think we will end the show the way we started it in the pilot, with a big family event.”
But before we see even the first episode of that season, there are still plenty of big possibilities for the show right at home. After all, Lily’s growing up quickly and has never been short on sass, and Joe’s getting old enough to cause plenty of trouble of his own.
