Serena Williams will no longer be able to wear her black catsuit at the French Open according to a recent decision made by the French Tennis Federation, causing many people to wonder why did they ban her from wearing her black catsuit?
In May, Serena Williams won her first Grand Slam tournament since having her baby and she did so in style. The tennis champion wore an all-black Nike catsuit with a red belt. According to Williams, the black catsuit made her feel powerful.
When asked about her powerful look during the tennis tournament, she told reporters it made her feel “like a warrior princess” from the blockbuster Marvel Comics film “Black Panther.”
Aside from making her feel like a warrior and giving a nod to the biggest superhero movie of all time, she also wore her catsuit for health reasons. Williams later explained that she won the 2017 Australian Open when she was two months pregnant and gave birth to her first child in September 2017. After giving birth, Williams suffered a series of blood clots in her lungs and nearly died. Williams has explained that she’s always had problems with blood clots and she wears pants to keep her blood circulation going.
Why is Serena Williams banned from wearing black catsuit at French Open?
The French Tennis Federation has decided it plans to make some changes to the dress code for its players for the 2019 French Open tournament and the decision has left many tennis fans angry at the decision.
French Tennis Federation president Bernard Giudicelli says he is implementing a dress code to regulate players uniforms.
“I think that sometimes we’ve gone too far,” Giudicelli said during an interview with Tennis Magazine. “It will no longer be accepted. One must respect the game and the place,” referring to the black catsuit Serena Williams wore during the tournament.
USA Today reports that Giudicelli did note that dress code regulations won’t be as strict as Wimbledon’s, which require competing athletes to wear white, but he does plan to “impose certain limits.”
