Why John Boyega is so excited about ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’

John Boyega and Stormtroopers

It’s hard to imagine John Boyega anything other than excited. Which is unsurprising as things have been going rather well for the 25-year-old actor over the last few years, from starring as Finn in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” to now leading and producing “Pacific Rim: Uprising.”

Earlier this month I had the opportunity to sit down and talk to Boyega about “Pacific Rim: Uprising.” You can read the details of our conversation on the blockbuster here. Towards the end of our chat, though, the topic turned to “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” and his return as Finn.

Boyega can hardly contain his excitement for the blockbuster, and there’s one specific reason why he is so eager for audiences across the world to finally see the film: writer and director Rian Johnson.

“The reason why I am very excited for this film is Rian Johnson. The guy has found a way of respecting the old, embracing what was done with JJ, expanding it with new ideas. It’s so funny we’re talking about two franchises here. One of them is like 4 or 5 years old with ‘Pacific Rim.’ The other is like 40 odd. But ‘Star Wars’ is still expanding. Especially with Rian’s mind and we’ve seen it with ‘Looper’ the things that have come from his brain.”

“To have those two elements together in one film, even visually is ridiculous. You saw those speeders going across the desert plains with the red? That’s Rian. Don’t know what he’s smoking, but it seems to be working.”

Last week we got our most impressive look yet at what Rian Johnson will bring to the “Star Wars” franchise in “The Last Jedi” with the release of its latest trailer, which you can watch in all of its glory below.

Just a couple of months after “The Last Jedi” is released on December 15 Boyega will return to our screens in “Pacific Rim: Uprising,” which will hit cinemas on March 23, 2018. You can also check out the trailer for “Uprising” below.
