Will Smith also sitting out the Oscars

Will Smith stopped by “Good Morning America” this morning to lend his support to wife JadaPinkett Smith’s boycotting of this years Academy Awards over the lack of diversity in the nominations. And honestly, it would have been pretty conspicuousif he didn’t speak up, right? I’m guessing there were some rather pointed conversations at home.

“My wife’s not going. It would be awkward to show up with Charlize [Theron]. We’ve discussed it. We’re part of this community. But at this current time, we’re uncomfortable to stand there and say, ‘This is OK,’” he tells Robin Roberts.“There’s a position that we hold in this community, and if we’re not a part of the solution, we’re part of the problem.And it was her call to action for herself and for me and for our family to be a part of the solution.”

Now, before you go suggesting this is just sour grapes because he didn’t get a Best Actor nod for his work in “Concussion,” Smith is quick to dispelthat notion. “This is so deeply not about me. This is about children that are going to sit down and watch this show and they’re not going to see themselves represented,” he says.“There’s a regressive slide toward separatism, towards racial and religious disharmony.And that’s not the Hollywood that I want to leave behind.”
