Dan Gilroy has dismissed any chances of a follow-up to Nightcrawler, the critically acclaimed 2014 thriller that originally paired him with Jake Gyllenhaal.
Nightcrawler sees Gyllenhaal portray Lou Bloom, a freelance photo and video journalist, also known as a stringer, that uses increasingly unethical and illegal actions to get his footage and then rise and rise through the world of media.

Over four years after its release, the rise of social media, the prevalence of technology, Trump’s label of “fake news,” partisan coverage and the sheer volume of news sites means that Nightcrawler’s indictment of coverage has never felt more relevant.
That’s exactly why, when I spoke to writer and director Dan Gilroy about his latest movie Velvet Buzzsaw, which is now available on Netflix, I had to know whether or not he had ever considered making a Nightcrawler sequel.
“No,” insists Gilroy. However, he does have a very good idea of what happened to Lou Bloom in the years after Nightcrawler.
“I always thought that if you came back 10 years after the end of Nightcrawler Lou would be running a major corporation. Every quality that he exhibits in that movie would serve him so well in the boardroom.”
“And I think what you see now in our country is supporting this terrible premonition I might have had. I definitely believe that the Lous of the world are winning.”
A sequel to Nightcrawler might not be as unlikely as it sounds, though.
Obviously the story is still bitingly relevant, much like The Social Network. Earlier this month, Aaron Sorkin, who was the writer of the Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg origin story, admitted to the Associated Press that he is considering scribing a follow-up to that particularly drama.
“First of all, I know a lot more about Facebook in 2005 than I do in 2018 — but, I know enough to know that there should be a sequel. I’ve gotten more than one email from [producer Scott Rudin] with an article attached saying, ‘Isn’t it time for a sequel?’”
“A lot of very interesting, dramatic stuff has happened since the movie ends with settling the lawsuit from the Winklevoss twins and Eduardo Saverin.”
