Will you be among this year’s 103 million holiday travelers?

For many Americans, the holidays mean somethingbeyond giving and receiving gifts: They mean traveling to visit loved ones (or possibly to avoid them).

This holiday season, AAA expects a record number of travelers — more than 103 million — on America’s roads and rails, in the skies and on the seas. That’s 1.5 million, or 1.5 percent, more than 2015.

“Rising incomes and continued low gas prices should make for a joyous holiday travel season,” AAA president and CEO Marshall Doney.

AAA defines the holiday travel season as Monday, Dec. 23, to Monday, Jan. 2.

In Philadelphia, there will be an estimated 1.1 million travelers this year, Jim Lardear, director of public and government affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic, told Metro. It is a 0.5 rise from 2015.

More than 6.4 million people are expected to travel in New York state, said Robert Sinclair, media relations manager for AAA New York. More than 5.7 million of them will do so in a vehicle, he added.

Most Americans, 93.6 million to be exact, will take a road trip for the holidays, AAA said, an increase of 1.5 percent from last year. Additionally, most drivers will pay the second-cheapest price for gas in nearly 10 years.

Air travel could possibly increase by 2.5 percent, while bus, train and cruise travel will see a small drop to 3.5 million people.
