Wilmer Flores tears up on field after he thinks he’s been traded from Mets

Carlos Gomez was a New York Met for about 45 minutes. Wilmer Flores was a Milwaukee Brewer for the same amount of time. Thursday morning, things are the same as they were on Wednesday morning when it pertains to the locations in which Gomez and Flores are employed.

New York and Milwaukee had agreed to the players in a trade, with Gomez coming to Citi Field and Flores and Zach Wheeler heading to Wisconsin. But at the very last moment, the Mets canceled the transaction as the team was frightened about a potential hip injury issue with Gomez.

As part of the trade that didn’t happen, Flores was left visibly crying while taking the field at shortstop.

“Someone came to me: ‘Wilmer’s crying,'” said Mets manager Terry Collins to ESPN after Mets fans gave him a standing ovation due to the impending trade. “There was nothing I knew about. Why would I take him out of the game.

Flores addressed his tearful non-goodbye.

“When I came up to hit I heard everybody cheering. I said, ‘Why?’ There’s no reason. I thought [a trade] was the only reason,” Flores told ESPN. “I was sad, being with the Mets forever, and all my teammates here. That’s why I got emotional.”

Mets GM Sandy Aldersonis said to haveapologized to Flores.
