Given the chance to paint on buildings around the country, New York born graffiti artist Renda Writer can only think of one thing worthy to say: world peace.
Writer is hoping that he can get his message across a brick wall — this time in the Lower East Side at 33 East 1st St where he’s spray-paintedthe words “world peace” over and over in New York Mets-themed colors. Though it might seem like an obsession (the one he finished on Sept.11 on 1st StreetisWriter’s 16th World Peace mural),it’s what he calls “a meditation.”
“It’s simple,” said Writer. “I think it’s a lot more possible than people think. It should not be looked at as some crazy, lofty, idealist dream. It’s something that’s really achievable.” The idea was partly inspired by the Boogie Down Production’s song “World Peace,” but soon became his own artistic mission.Writer did his first muralthis April in Miami, and he’s been spreading the messageover surfacesin Detroit,Philadephia, Jacksonville and Boston and Washington since July on what he calls his “World Peace Mural Tour.” He specifically wanted his New York mural to coincide with the Sept. 11 anniversary, a time when his message might really resonate, and to be completed ahead of World Peace day on Sept. 21.
“I will do this tour for the rest of my life,” said Writer.
