As we’re all painfully aware by this point, there are plenty of here are plenty of Christmas songs out there — some more obscure than others. But when it comes to New Year’s, a more secular and in some ways more awesome holiday, there’s a surprising dearth of good tunes in tribute. What’s up with that? Sure, there is of course “Auld Lang Syne,” a classic despite its confounding Scottish lyrics. But that’s just one song. Surely we can do better. British synth-pop band Hurts was thinking exactly that when they were tasked with that proud U.K. music tradition of recording a Christmas single. Looking to be a bit different, the group came up with “All I Want for Christmas is New Year’s Day,” a lovely tribute for those of us less interesting in the yuletide than we are in the turning of the year. Here they are performing it live:
You probably haven’t heard this awesome New Year’s song
And speaking of “Auld Lang Syne,” since it is proud tradition and a beautiful song and all, here’s Julie Andrews doing a pretty much perfect rendition of it.
Here’s to a great 2015.
