Your guide to the first-ever Panorama Music Festival

Coachella is the summer festival we all covet. But if you can’t make it to California, the same company is putting on Panorama, a brand new music fest on NYC’s summer schedule coming July 22-24.

Like Coachella, which features a sprawling wonderland of carnival rides, massive outdoor art displays and fireworks that make it the definitive West Coast summer event, Panorama aims to do way more than bring some of the hottest musical acts to Randall’s Island.

“Panorama truly is a modern-day World’s Fair of music, art, culture and technology, celebrating New York City as the capital of it all,” says Mark Shulman, festival producer at concert promotion company Goldenvoice. “It is the first large-scale music festival to bring together amazing experiential artists who create installations driven by technology, next to the biggest names in music and the best food this city has to offer.”

If that sounds like it’ll take all three days to get the full experience, don’t feel overwhelmed. We’ve got the highlights to plan your weekend between Major Lazer and Kendrick Lamar. And remember to download the fest’s app for updates throughout the weekend.

Genre-spanning music lineup

The festival’s 64 acts will be spread among three stages, with The Parlor devoted to dance music. Beyond the well-known headliners Arcade Fire, FKA Twigs and the newly reunited LCD Soundsystem, don’t miss local up-and-coming artists like the Brooklyn-based hip-hop group The Flatbush Zombies. And they’ll sound better than ever, thanks to a custom sound system created with LCD’s James Murphy. “The sound is a pure analogue audio technology experience, consistent with the Panorama theme,” Shulman says, adding that festival-goers will hear “entirely new dimensions” in their favorite records.

‘Interactive playground’

Take a break (and get some relief from the heat) inside The Lab, a showcase for a variety of installations made exclusive by NYC-based motion designers. Shulman calls it “the focal point for the visual art and technology aspects” of Panorama, with animated and interactive experiences. “The Lab will house larger-than-life art installations that combine artistry, technology and design, creating a unique interactive playground,” he says.

Make your own music

What do you get when you combine art, technology and music? Check out exhibits like a Cotton Candy Theremin, where noises and visuals created by visitors transform the cotton candy machine into an instrument; take a Visceral Recess in an inflatable playground that encourages you to find your inner child; and The Art of Pinball takes the classic arcade machine and transforms its sounds into a composition.

Get this grub

You can’t keep dancing without fuel, and Panorama has lined up 40 OF the buzziest restaurants all over the city. Dig into Eggloo‘s ice cream in a waffle ($10) for the sugar rush to keep grooving all day. Feeling healthy? Grab a customizable quinoa bowl from Flatiron’s seasonal Indian-inspired spot Inday ($9). Or go for some comfort food: South Williamsburg’s Loosie Rouge will be slinging its Creole-style fried kitchen ($15) and a pastrami po’boy created with Katz’s Delicatessen ($12).
