Zack Wheeler injury: Latest on Mets SP’s arm

Just when things were a little quiet on the injury front for the New York Mets, someone decided to blow the air horn at max levels.

Starting pitcher Zack Wheeler suffered a stress reaction in his right arm and has been placed on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to July 23, the team announced on Monday.

The Mets recalled Tyler Pill from triple-A Las Vegas to fill Wheeler’s spot in the rotation.

While it’s only the 10-day disabled list, this is a worrisome injury for Wheeler and the Mets. The 27-year-old just has not been able to stay healthy since making his MLB debut in 2013.

This season was his first time back on a big-league mound since 2014 after he was forced to undergo Tommy John surgery, a procedure that sidelined him for two full seasons. So obviously, any sort of arm injury is cause for alarm in Queens.

It’s been a trying season on the stats sheet for him. In 17 starts, Wheeler is 3-7 with a 5.21 ERA.

Given that the Mets are out of contention already, it would be wise if the team practiced extreme caution with Wheeler, even if it meant shutting him down for an extended period of time.
