Nets NBA news: Iman Shumpert waived

Iman Shumpert’s stay with the Brooklyn Nets might have been successful, but it was also short.

Brooklyn “reluctantly” waived the veteran guard on Thursday, per The Athletic’s Shams Charania, due to “full roster guarantees.”

Shumpert was brought in by the Nets last month after Caris LeVert went down with a thumb injury that was expected to hold him out for 4-to-6 weeks.

LeVert has not returned yet but recently began non-contact workouts. Brooklyn will also be getting veteran Wilson Chandler back in the fold shortly, which put the pressure on management to waive Shumpert.

The 32-year-old Wilson will make his Nets and season debut on Sunday against the Philadelphia 76ers after sitting out 25 games because of a PED violation.

Without LeVert and Kyrie Irving, the Nets went 9-4 in the 13 games with Shumpert as the 29-year-old averaged 4.2 points and 2.6 rebounds in 18.5 minutes played per game. However, his ability to defend along the wing made him an invaluable contributor.

Brooklyn had the option to waive others such as Theo Pinson, Rodions Kurucs, David Nwaba, and Dzanan Musa. But the organization opted to stick with its youth rather than hold onto Shumpert, who will now be looking to catch on with his sixth different NBA team.
