The Phillies announced on Tuesday afternoon that they signed infielder Ronald Torreyes to a minor-league contract with an invite to their big-league camp.
Torreyes, 26, appeared in just seven games last season with the Minnesota Twins, going 3-for-16 with an RBI.
He has a past with new Phillies manager Joe Girardi, however. The two worked together from 2016-2017 with the New York Yankees where Torreyes developed into a key contributor.
Torreyes slashed .292/.314/.375 with three home runs and 36 RBI in 108 games during the 2017 season with the Yankees. His efforts were vital for a team that had to deal with the injury bug.
As it stands, the Phillies’ infield lacks key depth after the team parted ways with Maikel Franco and Cesar Hernandez.
General manager Matt Klentak brought in former Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius to shift Jean Segura to second base, but Scott Kingery is still slated as the everyday third baseman at Citizens Bank Park.
Torreyes is capable of playing second base, third base, and shortstop that would add important versatility should he make the big-league roster out of spring training.
Still, expect the Phillies to continue exploring third-base options for the 2020 season with Kingery’s effectiveness as an everyday player up in the air.
The Phillies have been linked with the likes of Josh Donaldson and Kris Bryant earlier this offseason, but it’s been all quiet on those fronts for the last few weeks.
